Spring/Summer 2008 Catwalk Trends

If winter’s cinched silhouette, groomed glamour and hardware studded power dressing was just a little bit too high maintenance to uphold all winter long, spring’s new mood will feel like a breath of fresh air.

Gone is fashion's obsession with extreme shape and spiky textures. The focus has shifted to prints, patterns and fabrics. In every catwalk trend from romantic to 70s chic, winter’s hard edge has been replaced with a soft femininity. Out marched the dominatrix, in danced ruffles, florals and frills; delicate see-through chiffons and tulles; painterly prints; drapey forgiving fabrics and fluid shapes.

Don’t panic though, it’s not a girlie-girlie summer but a sophisticated, feminine season ahead, with grown up glamour to be found in the shape of Grecian jersey dresses, chic trousers suits and tailored safari looks – a soft, summer follow through from winter’s military trend.

You need not throw away all the belts you invested in for winter however. There is still room for waist cinching but with softer, obi and fabric belts to anchor voluminous dresses or accessorise spring’s ubiquitous high-waisted trousers.
You can forget about high maintenance hair and make-up though now winter is over. Summer calls for a pared down natural look. On the catwalk flushed cheeks and soft eyes were framed with messy curls, uncomplicated buns and ponytails. Plus the unkempt Bardot beehive is staying for spring.

Drawing inspiration from Pop artists, nature and fashion icons like Bianca Jagger, the new season has taken off in a sexy new direction – totally inspired by the 1970s, and there really is something for everyone. It all makes for an exciting new look full of whit and whimsy – the fun is back in fashion. Now select the look you want to see in more detail.
